WhatsApp: From Abstract Encryption to Lived Experience

Outernet London

Client: META WhatsApp

WhatsApp set out to make one of the most abstract concepts in technology, end-to-end encryption, instantly understandable and emotionally resonant.

Rather than telling people about privacy, the campaign turned an iconic OOH environment into live proof for WhatsApp’s privacy promise. By creatively exploiting Outernet London’s immersive digital infrastructure, the campaign transformed a single placement into a high-impact, participatory media moment that invited the public to experience privacy. Using the most advanced digital screens in the UK, the creative idea visualised something no one can normally see; encryption. Outernet London was selected for its ability to blend spectacle with interaction. WhatsApp took over every screen to create an immersive digital environment where visitors could send real messages and see them appear live on towering floating devices. Before each message was revealed, it appeared as encrypted ‘gibberish’, turning the medium into the message and demonstrating that no one, not even WhatsApp, can see or hear your personal messages. The idea extended seamlessly to exterior DOOH through an anamorphic execution that linked three separate screens into one illusion, maximising impact. This was not a traditional digital experience, but media reimagined as a live product experience. The campaign delivered a +51% uplift in agreement that WhatsApp is good at protecting users’ privacy. 92% of those exposed rated WhatsApp as good at protecting privacy (vs 61% non-exposed), and 91% trust WhatsApp to keep messages private (+26% uplift). These results demonstrated that a creatively ambitious media idea, executed intelligently, successfully cut through with a critical message.
