Bridge Command

Illusion Design & Constrcut

Bridge Command is what happens when you properly merge physical and digital worlds—not just screens in a room, but actual starship controls that directly affect what happens in a sophisticated multiplayer game.

When Parabolic Theatre came to us with their vision for the world's first proper interactive spaceship bridge, they weren't after fancy displays. They wanted something where pressing buttons and pulling levers actually makes things happen in the game, instantly, with up to 14 people playing together. The challenge was connecting real-world environments to the Empty Epsilon game engine—every switch, every dial, every control panel needed to talk directly to the game with zero lag. Because if there's even a slight delay, the whole illusion falls apart. Working with our technology partners Clockwork Dog, we built two complete starships in railway arches under Vauxhall. Insert a fuel canister and your ship refuels immediately in the game. Activate shields and you're actually protected from incoming fire. Pull the weapons trigger and your target takes real damage. We created six different bridge stations—Captain, Helm, Weapons, Engineering, Science, and Communications—each controlling different parts of the ship but needing to work together. The lighting reacts to what's happening in the game (red alert anyone?), the audio gives you constant feedback, and we even record your adventures so you can take them home. After 18 months of daily operation, the systems still run perfectly with zero downtime. We've had enquiries from around the world asking how we did it.
